Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Officers say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered numerous other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; authorities are not yet cognizant of any injuries in connection with the incident," they stated.
City officials said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.
A high-ranking political figure commented the attack rendered him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he wrote on a platform, referring to the death of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
